What is MIL-PRF-31013 and how does it differ from ANSI Z87.1?
MIL-PRF-31013 is the U.S. military's performance specification for combat ballistic eyewear — specifically testing fragmentation resistance, which is the primary eye threat in combat environments. ANSI Z87.1 is the civilian industrial safety standard testing for high-mass and high-velocity impact. These M Frame 3.0 lenses meet both — making them simultaneously compliant for military combat, law enforcement tactical operations, and industrial safety requirements. The combination is the highest civilian-accessible certification stack available in eyewear.
What is Plutonite® and why does it matter?
Plutonite® is Oakley's proprietary optical-grade lens material — not off-the-shelf polycarbonate. It provides inherent UV400 protection without coatings, delivers exceptional optical clarity, and meets the impact thresholds required for MIL-PRF-31013 certification. The material itself filters 100% of UVA, UVB, and harmful blue light up to 400nm wavelength — no degradation from coating wear over time.
What is HDO® and will I notice the difference?
HDO® (High Definition Optics) is Oakley's patented lens geometry system that corrects for the optical distortion created by wrapping a lens around a curved frame. Most wrap-style eyewear introduces peripheral distortion — Oakley's Polaric Ellipsoid™ toric lens geometry eliminates it. The result is accurate, undistorted vision across the full field of view — critical when tracking targets, reading terrain, or operating in close-quarters environments where optical accuracy matters.
Will these fit under my helmet?
Yes. The M Frame 3.0 is fully compatible with MICH, ACH, CVD, PASGT, and Crye™ helmet systems. The thin stem technology keeps the temple arms slim enough to fit cleanly under the helmet suspension system without pressure points. The frame is also compatible with helmet-mounted night vision devices — it will not interfere with NVG mounting hardware.
Will these fit under my hearing protection or comms headset?
Yes. The thin stem design is specifically engineered for compatibility with over-ear hearing protection (Peltors, Sordin, MSA, etc.) and communication headsets. The slim temple profile reduces the pressure and gap issues that standard-arm eyewear creates when worn under over-ear systems.
How fast is the lens change and can I do it in the field?
The M Frame 3.0 uses a secure clip retention system that allows a complete lens swap without any tools. With practice, the lens change takes under 30 seconds. The Array kit includes both Clear and Grey lenses, so you can switch from a low-light lens to a sun lens during an operation without carrying a second pair of eyewear.
What does the Unobtainium® nose pad actually do?
Unobtainium® is Oakley's proprietary hydrophilic material — meaning it increases its grip coefficient when it gets wet. Unlike standard rubber nose pads that get slippery under sweat or rain, Unobtainium® grips harder under wet conditions. This keeps the frame anchored to your face during high-intensity activity when standard eyewear would be sliding down your nose.
