Alpha Olefin Sulfonate: Overview
Alpha Olefin Sulfonate (AOS) is a biodegradable, anionic surfactant derived from olefins (usually from coconut or palm oil) through sulfonation. It is widely used in personal care, household, and industrial cleaning products due to its high foaming ability, mildness on the skin, and excellent cleansing properties.
AOS is commonly found in shampoos, body washes, liquid soaps, dishwashing liquids, and detergents as a sulfate-free alternative. It offers good emulsification, stability in hard water, and strong degreasing power, making it a preferred choice in eco-friendly and sulfate-free formulations. In the Europe, it is often labeled as Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate (AOS 40, AOS 70, or AOS Powder) in ingredient lists.
