Celebrating Gustav Klimt
Often referred to as the “Austrian Mona Lisa”, Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) is one of the most celebrated works of the painter’s “Golden Phase.”
During World War II, the Nazis seized the portrait from the family. Decades later, Adele’s niece, Maria Altmann, fought a landmark legal battle to reclaim it and the work was returned in 2006. It is now a centerpiece at New York’s Neue Galerie.
