Wintering Well Details
About the Painting: Winter NourishmentThis painting explores the hidden life around an iceberg. Cold polar water holds more oxygen, which makes it incredibly productive. More plankton feed more fish, which feed more predators, and nutrients cycle back through currents in a powerful and concentrated web of life. What looks quiet on the surface is actually buzzing with activity below. We only ever see a small portion of an iceberg above water while most of its mass drifts, melts, and reshapes beneath the surface.
Sea ice also helps steady the whole planet. In winter, it reflects sunlight back into space so the ocean does not absorb too much heat. Less ice means warmer water and a wobblier climate, so what happens here reaches all the way to our ski seasons, our weather, and even the oxygen we breathe.
Little Dude thinks about winter in a familiar way. Warm soups, tea, slowing down, and finding cozy rituals that help us move with the season instead of fighting it. A tiny fishing line drops into the water as a nod to nourishing ourselves through this season (fishing is a metaphor for food), but also our real connection to these distant places. The iceberg ends up in your lungs, on your plate, in your water, and under your skis. It feels like a giant drifting sculpture, nature’s own art installation quietly supporting everyday life far beyond the horizon.
