'moriuo sports' is a new illustration book by Tokyo-based artist moriuo, published alongside his recent exhibition at platform3 in Tokyo.
This series focuses on “Taikukai-kei” — school athletes and sports club boys. Through acrylic and pencil drawings, moriuo explores the quiet fascination with uniforms, shared spaces, and the atmosphere around sports culture. It’s not just about the body, but the small details: the locker room, casual gestures, and the closeness between friends.
His work reflects a sense of longing and memory—how these everyday scenes can become something more personal over time.
The book includes both exhibition works and short comic stories, offering a fuller look into his world.
Moriuo began his career creating flyers for Tokyo’s gay clubs in the late 90s, later contributing to major magazines like Badi and G-Men. His work is known for its warmth and emotional connection, often focusing on gentle moments between men. In 2022, his work was also featured by the global beauty brand Lush as part of its LGBTQ same-sex marriage campaign in Japan.
