Rev. Richard Mather (d. 1669), first minister at Dorchester, Mass., was a powerful force in his own right. Among his well-known descendants were son Rev. Increase Mather (1639-1723) and his son Rev. Cotton Mather (1662-1727); Increase's niece Eunice (Mather) Williams (d. 1704), a victim of the raid on Deerfield; and many others. Since the eighteenth century, the only people with the Mather surname have been descendants of Rev. Richard's son Timothy, a Dorchester farmer. This work carries the descendants of this important and interesting family to ca. 1890.
