Smalls Paradise was Harlem's legendary jazz club — the place where flappers did the Charleston and Duke Ellington played to packed rooms in the 1920s and 30s. Helen Frankenthaler's 1964 painting named for it carries that energy: loose, expansive, poured directly onto raw canvas in the technique she invented. One of the most joyful works in the colour field canon.
