風 (Fēng) — 36 Inch Ohm Wind Gong Handcrafted in China

A wind gong is a flat bronze plated gong with no turned rim like most of the gongs you see.

The entire face is the playing surface, and the instrument hangs freely from cord tied through holes near the top of the plate. This construction is central to the sound character of this gong.

With no rim to contain and reflect vibration inward, the energy releases immediately and in all directions. This is why wind gongs respond with such speed, shimmer, and openness.

This is a 36-inch wind gong handcrafted in China, made to Ohm Store specifications from a B20 bronze alloy. The hammer marks are visible across the face of the gong, with each strike of the hammer during shaping serving as a deliberate adjustment to the geometry of the plate.

Sound

The sound recording shows exactly what makes this 36-inch wind gong compelling: a fast, immediate attack with a broad wash of tone that opens quickly. 

At 36 inches, this gong has low end presence, but it is still extremely responsive. It does not need to be overplayed to express full dynamics. Even with a lighter strike, the gong produces a wide field of shimmer and metallic bloom. 

The first impression will be brightness and speed. The upper frequencies show up quickly, then spread outward into a warm sustain. Beneath that shimmer is a grounded low-mid foundation that gives the instrument weight without making it feel slow or overly heavy.

The dynamic range is excellent for a gong of this size. At soft dynamics, it produces a quiet, airy glow with fine upper-frequency texture. With stronger playing, it opens into a full, room-filling crash with a bright, radiant edge.

New instruments like these benefit from being played in. Over the first several weeks of regular use, the plate’s internal structure will continue to settle and the gong will open further.

The Character 風

The character stamped above center is 風, pronounced Fēng, meaning Wind.

Its earliest pictographic forms depicted a phoenix in flight. Over centuries, the character evolved, but the meaning remained: movement, breath, invisible force, and the energy that travels through open space.

It is a fitting mark for this instrument. A wind gong does not hold its sound tightly. It releases it.
