The history of Chinese knot tying is rich and spans thousands of years. It is an ancient craft that involves the intricate weaving of cords or strings into symmetrical knots, each with its own symbolic meaning. The knots were used for a variety of purposes in traditional Chinese culture, from decorative to functional, and continue to be popular in art, fashion, and design today.

In ancient China, knots were often used to fasten clothing, harnesses, or to tie scrolls. They were sometimes employed as an alternative to written language in early record-keeping systems, where different knots signified different numbers or concepts.

As Chinese knotting evolved, it became more deeply intertwined with Chinese culture and symbolism. Knots were not only functional but also held rich meanings related to prosperity, good luck, and protection. Some knots became associated with specific occasions, rituals, and wishes.

• Eternal Life and Good Fortune: The most well-known knot in Chinese knotting is the "eternity knot" (also called the "endless knot" or "buyao"). It symbolizes the cyclical nature of life, eternal love, and the interconnectedness of all things. The endless knot often appears in religious and philosophical contexts, such as in Buddhism, representing the infinite flow of wisdom and compassion.

• Longevity and Happiness: The "double coin knot" (雙錢結, shuāng qián jié) resembles ancient Chinese coins and is a symbol of wealth and prosperity. It is often used as a charm for good luck or tied to gift packages, particularly during festivals like the Chinese New Year.

• Good Health and Protection: Knots like the "peach knot" (桃形結, táo xíng jié) are designed to protect against evil and disease. The peach, a fruit considered a symbol of immortality in Chinese folklore, often appears in knot patterns as a symbol of health.

• Love and Relationships: The "lover's knot" (情人結, qíngrén jié) represents love and romantic connections. Its intertwined design symbolizes unity and the eternal bond between lovers.

Michelle will also do a traditional Chinese calligraphy demonstration. Long revered as fine art even before painting, calligraphy was prized not only for its function in communication among imperials and scholars, but also for its visual beauty.
