Uncaria tomentosa, also known as Cat’s claw, has been used for thousands of years by indigenous people of the Amazon for treating a variety of inflammatory conditions. The medicine is derived from the inner bark of the vine.

Traditional uses include as an antibiotic to treat syphilis, cognitive issues, asthma, stomach problems, rheumatologic conditions and certain tumors. 

Cat’s claw has been found to increase white blood cells, including B and T lymphocytes, and natural killer (NK) cells. It has immune modulatory properties and has been shown to increase CD 57 natural killer cells, which are often low in patients with persistent Lyme disease.

In recent studies, Cat’s Claw has been shown to be effective at treating Lyme disease persister forms, however, interestingly despite its common use in the treatment of Lyme, it did not show efficacy against the growing/active form of Lyme. 

It also shows some potential impact on Bartonella henselae, albeit small.
