Triploid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were introduced to the lake to control excessive growth of invasive macrophytes. The lake experiences cyanobacterial blooms dominated by Limnoraphis birgei often co-occurring with other bloom-formers (e.g. Microcystis, Dolichospermum, Aphanizomenon) in late summer and early fall. |

This strain is likely capable of non-heterocyst N2 fixation. Growth experiments demonstrate substantial biomass increase in N-free BG-11 medium; at rates not significantly different from those observed in N-replete media. While this strain can also grow on solid BG-11 medium, upon transfer back into liquid medium the filaments do not retain their buoyancy and are no longer viable. |
