Walnut Burl Chess set 50x50cm (Large) with Staunton Chessmen 8.9cm King. This unique wooden chess set includes a variety of thoughtfully sourced products. The set includes the perfectly matched Walnut Burl chessboard that was crafted in our workshop in Greece by skillful artisans using the Art of Marquetry. The chessmen are weighted and feature a 8.5cm King height. Carefully selected wood veneers, traditional designs and special craftsmanship using the art of Marquetry  give life to our Wooden Chess collection. The Staunton chess pieces, the ones we know and love, the ones we simply think of as chess pieces. These classic chess pieces are named after Howard Staunton who was widely considered to be one of the best players in the world. The knight, the most intricate and distinct piece of any chess set, is a realistically carved horse head. The Staunton Knight was likely inspired by sculpture on the east pediment of the Parthenon.
